2K Recruits Popular Battle Royale Producer to Boost Troubled Action Game Project Ethos

2K Games has secured a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently developing the anticipated third-person action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Management Transition Follows Poor Feedback

The new appointee assumes the leadership position at 31st Union following the dismissal of former leader the ex-Sledgehammer Games executive, who was reportedly let go due to the game's lackluster early showing last autumn.

On Wednesday, the company's top executive a key figure informed team members about this decision through an official communication, which emphasized that playtesting had indicated the requirement for a distinct game identity.

Ismailer stated that the team is now overhauling the project with a refreshed focus, aiming to better meet gamer demands.

Trend of Strategic Acquisitions

This announcement mirrors a similar step taken by 2K Games in the summer, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to contribute to the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.

Below is the full text from Ismailer's communication:

Team—

I know you all just finished your town hall - I trust you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the positive developments. Last time I sent you all a note, I expressed the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most dedicated and innovative designers we have had the pleasure to partner with - and we’re excited for that collaboration to endure.”

Through your commitment and versatility, particularly over the last year, you continue to prove that.

The player input from last fall’s Project ETHOS demo was informative. It validated the potential of a roguelike shooter but told us we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the necessity for a clearer vision.

The progress is encouraging to see how far you’ve progressed. You embraced the criticism to mind and overhauled Project ETHOS with a revitalized vision - one that’s poised to achieve its potential to our players.

The belief in this project grows every day. To advance the outstanding advancement you’ve made, I am thrilled to announce Ben Brinkman as the new Director of the team. After several months of discussions, he starts with us on Monday, October 20.

Ben’s leadership and background in the PVP shooter genre is extensive, having spent the last 15 years producing and overseeing some of the most popular titles in gaming, for example Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, the battle royale hit.

Let’s together in welcoming him in the coming days. We are all excited to persist observing the development of the game in the weeks to come.

David

Background of the New Leader

Brinkman presently holds the position of executive producer and production lead at the renowned studio for their flagship title. Brinkman earlier was employed at major gaming companies in diverse development positions on the iconic franchise series, and, prior to that, had stints at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Title Information and Vision

The upcoming game was revealed in last year alongside a early access event. Then, 31st Union portrayed the game as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an thrilling step forward on the genre."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the game's pitch states. "Face the competition with fresh skills, challenges, and obstacles that shift every match. Do you withdraw carefully with your collected items? Alternatively aim high, gamble everything, and trust your squad can secure victory? The choice is up to you."

The game does not have an official debut schedule or supported systems, but fans can look forward to additional details as development continues.
