A minimum of 13 passengers perish and 98 wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” affirmed the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in public works. They were built at an rapid pace, beating predictions to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party called for an prompt suspension in the development and management of all such projects.

This halt was suggested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In response, the president insisted that the train had been running in total accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and management of these strategic projects.
