European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while European leaders contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
