Users Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that people who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People using these drugs must be aware of the risk of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to original weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Doctors believe the way of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Stopping of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be life-long.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Experiences

Individuals who have come off the medication explain a intense return of hunger.

"I experienced something flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," described an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural changes.
